Fresh from Ohio University Jay Antzakas is lured to Atlanta by the distant satellite signal of Atlanta's Superstation 17, WTCG. 1979 WTCG (Watch-This-Channel-Grow) matures to WTBS and the call-letter change becomes this team's first station package. The WTBS look is maintained completely in-house. 1980 CNN goes on the air. The future founders of TVbD are there and have worked to make the launch a success. Many of the first CNN graphics and sales prentations were produced by this group. 1981 A Finite World; debuts. Produced by Barbara Y.E. Pyle, the program marks the beginning of Ted Turner's lasting commitment to social and environmental issues. TVbD founders receive their first (local) Emmy award. 1982 CNN2 launches, later to become CNN Headline News. 1983 The founders leave TBS to form Television by Design, Inc. 1984 Our first office, our first Quantel Paintbox, our first Macintosh. 1985 We're nineteen! A fun, irreverent identity is created by TVbD and WOIO nineteen signs-on and takes Cleveland by storm. We're Your Station! A warm, friendly identity launches KPTM 42 in Omaha. 1986 SuperSiete is the campaign developed for WSTE, covering the entire island of Puerto Rico from 3 VHF transmitters, all on channel 7. 1987 Founding member John Burns resigns. Melanie Goux assumes role of design director. 1989 Leslie Sole selects TVbD for Toronto's CFMT and begins a productive relationship that continues today. 1990 Sony Corp commissions TVbD to produce the first NAB demo for a remarkable new DVE called SYSTEM G. The confidential project requires the TVbD group to work at Sony Headquarters in Atsugi, Japan. 1992 A news package produced for KUSA 9 / Denver, then an ABC affiliate station, becomes our most successful syndicated package to date. Known as 'BALLS&WALLS' the package is eventually implemented in over 20 markets and still airs today. 1993 D1 compositing, as office space at Park Place doubles. 1994 BAY•TV / San Francisco is launched with an award winning identity designed in collaboration with James A. Houff. 1995 KRON 4 / San Francisco requested and received a look that would become an 'instant classic'. Updated and expanded, but never revised, the look served the number 1 newscast in San Francisco for six years. 1996 The Shopping Channel / Toronto becomes our first foray into e-commerce. In addition to launching a successful cable channel, tSc vends via outlet stores, direct mail catalogs and web shopping. Our first TVbD Web site debuts to rave meeting room, (BDA Gold) 1997 The big move into our spacious new building on 14th Street in midtown Atlanta. 1998 Our first HDTV graphics project is completed for KRON in San Francisco for use in the first digital broadcast in the Bay Area. 1999 The year of the dog (Daisy). The 'We're Your Station!' group image package is introduced for all Pappas Telecasting Stations. 2000 Eight Pappas Group Station Identities completed and implemented across the US. Twenty year celebration at the FOX Theatre for the 'Turner Originals'. 2001 Pappas Telecasting and AztecaTV launch Azteca America. A network of Spanish language stations throughout the South and West. Balls & Walls 2K launches at WOKR. Ted Turner forms Ted Turner Pictures, Ted Turner Documentaries, Ted Turner Productions and Ted Turner Film Properties. TVbD designs the new collection of brands, print collateral, video and film signatures. 2002 Design Director Melanie Goux is commissioned by RotoVision Publishing to author a new book on motion graphic design scheduled for publication in the Spring of 2003. The book (titled On Screen, In Time), was co-authored by long time friend and creative collaborator, James A. Houff. 2003 The twenty year anniversary of Television by Design. 2004 Presidential campaigns awakend a political spirit. 2005 Call for Help, Fine Print, Weaver, Gadgets and Gizmos, Spirit of the Art, 3D Dialogue, The Standard, G4 Tech TV 2006 OMNI 10, OMNI 11, KARE HD, Eight Political Campaigns. An offer we couldn't refuse, so we sold our studio space of 10 years. 2007 We're in moving mode! Construction of our new studio is underway! |
